"Soldier's Home" Summary
Ernest Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home” is a short story about an American soldier who has recently returned home to Oklahoma after serving in WWI. The soldier is named Harold Krebs and he is living at his parents’ house. He comes home later than most of the other soldiers came home so he misses out on all the elaborate welcome home greetings. When Krebs first comes home he doesn’t want to tell his war story, but after a while he wants to tell his story and no one will listen to him. All the people in town have already heard all the other stories of the soldiers that came home before him. Krebs finds that the only way he can get people to listen to him is to lie about what happened to him to make it sound more interesting.
